The Monuments of La Rochelle

One thing I love doing when going to a new city is to tour the churches in the area.  When I went to La Rochelle I toured the Cathedral, Notra Dame, Saint Sauveur and the town’s Hotel de Ville (town hall).  I had been hoping to see some spectacular sights but was disappointed.

The first place I went looking for was the place they called “The Cathedral”.  The name sounds impressive.

The outside was not what I expected.  There were little to no carvings or religious anything on the outside!  The inside had the standard stain glass windows that I love but the stain glass depicted things I wasn’t familiar with.  I understand the Moses with the water and the fish because it’s a fishing town.  What I don’t understand the angle killing the half-man half-demon,  the little girl / little Jesus running to the king or who Jesus is making well.

There were a large amount of paintings in this church.  Now that I have my handy dandy new camera I can show some of them!  Some paintings were just pretty, some very well done and some down right creepy!

This place was also painted in bright colors, had a priceless sculpture of Jesus and Joseph and I got to see my buddy Anthony.

Three things that where odd was the pot that looked like it was dedicated to the devil, the marine time ship out of the bottle and the tomb for three!

Next stop Saint- Sauveur

And for some reason I didn’t take a picture of the outside of the building.  I can only tell you that it was not very pretty or interesting.  The tourist sign said:

This church was consecrated in 1718.  It was the only Romanesque church in the XII centry and was destroyed in 1568 during the religious conflict.  All that is left of the original building is the gothic steeple.  The church was ravaged by a fire in 1750.  This church’s patrons consisted mostly of sailors and their families.

Inside I took two pictures of some pretty paintings, one of the organ and one of the neat stain glass window in a far courner.

I also found Mr. Anthony and this lady standing on a snake with two kids behind her.

I wasn’t impressed with this church either.

There where postcards of the Hotel de Ville so I thought my next stop should be there.  It looked like a grand place to snap pictures and research history.  Sadly the Hotel de Ville is currently under construction.  A few of the cool new additions are these four ladies hanging out on the right side of the building.

The Notra Dame translates to “Our Lady” so I got it in my mind that all cities must take pride in their Notra Dames!  This was going to be my money shot.  Interesting and excitement here I come!

The outside looked less then promising.

The inside didn’t do much better.  There were a few bits of color on the wall two note worth paintings and only one interesting stain glass window.

The one thing that was interesting was the statues.  I really love statues of Joseph and Jesus because it reminds me of my Daddy.  That and Jesus and Joseph always look happy in them.

This statue was unique because we have the exact same one at school!  Well ours at school is missing an few arms, noses and legs but it still looks like a replica.  I wonder if ours is the original or if this one was just better maintained.

I found two statues of my buddy Anthony in this church.  The first one looks like Anthony is begging Mary for his little kid back.  The second one looks like she gave in.  The familiar Anthony statue just like old times!
