Tips

  1. US trac phones don't work in Europe, starting when the plane takes off.
  2. Just becouse a product looks familiar, it still might not be the American equivelent.  Getting something that looks like crest toothpast then ending up brushing with denter goo is not cool.
  3. Here there is a ton of chocolate!  Even chocolate bread, but Dr. Pepper is hard to find.
  4. Wifi means internet connection, not Wifi.
  5. In America cars watch out for people in the street.  Here people watch out for cars.
  6. The thing on the Right (on the wall) has absolutly nothing to do with the heat!  The thing on the Left (on the floor) does.
  7. The frig has to be turned on.  It will not be when you arrive.
  8. The cheapest sugar here is the brand "Daddy".
  9. In Poitiers the personal comfort distance between one person and another is a lot closer.
  10. Bathrooms will have both a woman and man sign.  Don't worry.  People wash hands together but they do have sperate bathrooms.
  11. The French are always at least 15 minutes late... or so I'm told.
  12. Most milk sits on a shelf next to the soda.

  13. You'll go to a ton of diffrent places just to find flat american cheese and american style bread for grilled cheese and soup night.
  14. DO NOT EAT THE PIZZA!
  15. Signs writen in English are funnier to Americans... the French will just look at you like you crazy.  They are 1/2 right.
  16. Don't buy a can opener, you won't need it.  All can have a pop top.
  17. Students talk or play on their computer before class, during class, and after class.  It's normal.
  18. Classes are very diffrent.  One class may meet on Monday one week and then you might not go to that class again for 1 or 2 weeks.  When you go the second time it might be on a diffrent day or diffrent time or both!
  19. The grade scale is 1-20 with 20 being the best instead of 1-4 or F-A.
  20. Coffee comes in really small cups.
  21. When you can't find a 'how to learn French' book, children books work just fine.
